What a tradesman's website actually costs.
A straight price list rather than a "contact us for a quote": what £350 all in covers, what the monthly figure pays for, and the costs that catch trades out.
Ask four designers what a trade website costs and you will get four evasions. So here are my actual numbers, and an honest description of the other options, including the ones that are cheaper than me.
A website for a roofer, a paver, a cleaner or a groundworker does not need to be complicated. It needs a page for each job type, your photos, your reviews, your area and your number one tap away. That is a fixed amount of work, which is why I can quote a fixed price instead of asking you to fill in a form and wait.
The price
£350 all in, then £19.99 a month.
Half to start the build, the balance on completion. Everything in this list is part of the £350, not an extra:
Custom website
Designed around your business, not dropped into a template.
Professional design
The same standard of design I've been producing for 15+ years.
Mobile responsive
Checked on desktop, tablet and phone before it goes live.
Domain name
Your own website address, registered and pointed for you.
Business email
A proper you@yourbusiness.co.uk address instead of a Gmail.
Contact forms
Enquiries land straight in your inbox, ready to reply to.
WhatsApp integration
One tap from your website into a WhatsApp chat with you.
Google Maps
Your location or service area shown clearly on the page.
Social links
Your Facebook and other profiles wired in properly.
SSL certificate
The padlock in the browser, so visitors see a secure site.
Google ready SEO foundation
Titles, descriptions, headings and structured data set up from day one.
Launch support
I'm on the phone or WhatsApp while it goes live, not behind a ticket system.
If customers need to book a slot rather than wait for a callback, a website with an online booking system is £479 all in. The full list is on the what's included page.
The alternatives
Four honest routes, including the cheap ones.
Template builder, done yourself
A low monthly fee and no build cost, but every decision and every hour is yours: layout, copy, photo cropping, page structure, search wording. The cheapest option on paper and the most expensive in evenings.
A mate who does websites
Often genuinely cheap, sometimes excellent. The risk is what happens in eighteen months when they are busy: who holds the domain, who can change a price, who renews the hosting.
This studio
£350 all in for the design and build with the domain, business email and first three months of hosting included, then £19.99 a month. Live within 48 hours of you approving the design.
A local agency
Typically a four-figure build with a proper team behind it, monthly retainers, and a process that takes weeks. Worth it for a business with a marketing budget and several people to coordinate. Heavy for a one-van trade.
Worth knowing
The three costs that catch trades out.
A domain in the wrong name. If the designer registers it to themselves, you cannot move your site without their cooperation. Yours should be registered in your business name, and mine always is.
Hosting and email arriving as separate bills. A build price with no hosting included is not the price. Ask what the total is for the first year before you compare anything.
Paying hourly for small changes. Prices change, services change, you get better photos. Changes are part of the £19.99 a month here, so you are never weighing up whether an edit is worth the invoice.
If price is the deciding factor, start on the affordable website design page, compare the options honestly in your own website vs Checkatrade, MyBuilder and Rated People, or go straight to the page for your trade from the websites for tradesmen hub.
